Teacher Profile

James Manley
Stacks Image 8772

B.A., Music, UNC Wilmington

By the age of two, Jay Manley was playing guitar. Childhood included figuring out Beatles songs on a dulcimer, making drums out of cans and improvising on piano. He received a music degree from University of North Carolina Wilmington studying classical, jazz guitar and composition. Much later and for three years, Jay studied the Hindustani classical musical tradition under vocalist Madhu Mita Sen Saha. Extensive study of classical theory and performance did not derail the desire to create pop music on electric guitar but nourished experimentation. Jay's electric guitar style pulls from a broad palate of flavors. His teaching styles stresses the importance of learning to read notated guitar music early rather than limiting oneself to tablature. For beginners, melody is the course of study before chords.
